DJ Mixes
Aside from producing my own music I love taking other people's stuff (and my own I guess) and mixing it together. I started DJing in or around February 2004 with vinyl and a pair of Technics 1210s, later acquiring a pair of Pioneer CDJ800s in August 2005. Whilst I still enjoy live mixing from time to time, when creating sets I much prefer to use Ableton, which is what most of the ones on this page were made with.
I've done shitloads of mixes over the years but I've only shared the best ones on here. I'm generally not a fan of standard DJ 'monthly promo' style mixes that just throw 10-12 recent tunes together; the ones on here are more themed with that little bit of extra care and attention to detail that hopefully sets them out from the crowd a little more. The possible exceptions are the Compulsive mixes... Despite the fact the filenames say 'Live' they are all Ableton recreations of gigs I've played; hopefully they give off an energetic vibe you can picture being out in a club to.

It felt like it needed to be a trilogy.. not to mention there were still loads of dearly beloved tunes missing from the first two. I actually prefer this slightly to the second one; it flows better and feels more complete; with a larger variety of stuff ranging ~15 years between the oldest & newest track. This will almost certainly be the last in the series; I don't have 50 more tunes special enough to warrant another. It's been rather emotional...

Having come up with a penchant for long megamix type compilations I thought it was about time I did a sort of 'year in review' type set to sum up how trance was for me in any given year. The initial plan was to keep it like the 'All Time' sets; 50 tunes, 3.5 hours. For the sake of creating a nicely flowing set with all the tunes i wanted to include, however, those limits didn't quite stick. The result is pretty epic and centers mostly on peaktime material, building up through a range of prog-trance and veering into tech/psy/hard territory towards the end.

The long-overdue sequel to my 'favourite ever' mix further down the page. Basically my next-best 50 favourite tunes having discounted the ones used in part 1.. although I wasn't as strict this time and chopped & changed a couple to make the mix flow better. It didn't quite fall into place as magically as part 1! The format is virtually the same; if you like one then you should enjoy the other.

This was supposed to be Compulsive's grand relaunch, however things didn't go too well and it ended up being the last night, mostly down to us picking the wrong venue. I volunteered to play the opening warmup set for this one, so my mate could have a stab at playing my usual closing slot. The result is a nice, gradual build from steady progressive to early-doors trance, with a few bouncy techy numbers and classics along the way. The small handful of people in the club looked to be dancing by the time I'd finished so it must have gone well.

I'd gotten a touch of vocal fever after creating the first one of these and there were still loads of songs I hadn't used, so blitzed nearly all of them in this 5 hour marathon session and gave it to my ex as a birthday present (the very last track is her all-time favourite song). I've been thinking about knocking part 3 up but I'd be pretty stretched with regards to songs I like!

CD Length mix comprising entirely of my own productions/remixes. I picked the tunes in terms of how well they'd fit, musically & structurally, rather than trying to paint it as a 'best of'. I guess this is a good demo if you're interested in what I make; if not then hopefully it should stand up as a nice set in its own right.

There was a thread on Tranceaddict a while ago inviting people to post a 30 minute tribute set for an artist of their choice. I chose Jezper (aka Airbase) not because I would class him as my favourite but because I find him massively underrated; all too often he gets panned off as another cookie-cutter generic trance producer but aside from his big uplifting material he's capable of some quality solid stuff, which I've tried my best to showcase in this little pocketsized session.

This basically came about cos my ex was a massive fan of vocal trance and wanted another long mix akin to 'All Time' further down the page. Doing my best to avoid reusing the same tunes twice I picked out ~60 or so tracks from the depths of my hard drive and set about piecing them together in a similar fashion, ranging from a gentle opening through a rather epic journey to some more banging stuff near the end. It's pretty commercial-friendly; would probably make a handy tool for converting people (girls especially :-p) to trance.

This turned out to be the last Compulsive night at 414, the departure from which eventually proved to be the Night's downfall. I had a feeling this would be the case so brought along a few classics with me to bang out at the end of the night. It gets pretty fast later on, mainly because 414 normally plays hard dance and there would always be people wanting it harder. There's a little psy early on too, so it's a bit of a mixed bag.

I have many happy memories from this night! I'd just come back from a cracking 2 weeks in Ibiza and the proverbial comedown was somewhat eased by the prospect of banging out another closing set. Whether the other DJs had as good a night as I did remains in dispute, as unfortunately the club turned out to be completely dead until about 3:30am (I will never forget the depressing image of 'Anthem' being played at 3am to an empty dancefloor) and unfortunately for the DJ before me, one of the vinyl decks turned out to be faulty. Since he didn't have any CDs with him he conceded defeat and gifted me an extended set..
Lo & behold the club was mine from 3:45 onwards, and better still it started filling up. I went for a barrage of relentless, heads-down, no-frills, driving trance with little in the way of hands-in-air fluffiness; the result is probably the most solid & consistent liveset I've ever played (although I think i messed up the order around Push Through/Exocet/Blessed when recreating it). The best part of this night however was undoubtedly having my DJ Booth invaded by a cute Brazillian girl by the name of Alyne da Silva, who nigh-on-demanded I went back to hers the following morning. Happy days indeed :-)

This is undoubtedly the holy grail of all mixes I've made or ever will make; in the summer of this year I took some time out to go through my entire music collection and narrow it down to 50 of my all time favourite tunes (whilst remaining in the mixable trance/edm sector) and go on to make a marathon megamix out of them. The ease in which everything fell into place was remarkable; I've done a number of these kind of mixes since and have had endless trouble combining tracks harmonically or making them fit altogether.. that simply wasn't the case here and I didn't have to make any substitutions at all (save for reverting to the original mix of Offshore and using it as an intro, which worked out for the better).
The original aim was to fit 50 tracks in 3 hours, however I abandoned this restriction about 60-70% through and let the closing stages flow freely. All in all this has proved somewhat of a soundtrack to my life thus far; if I die in the next few years I want it played at my funeral!

The second set I played for the Brixton night, again taking up the closing slot, from 4:40-6am. Perhaps not as epic as the first, with a little more of a darker vibe to most of it, but still peaking strongly with a brace of my own productions (Senoi & Essence). Someone from the club staff came up & put the lasers on during Essence - the only time I've seen them turned on - which was fantastic, especially as the place was packed to the rafters. There are few other occasions where I could have gotten away with dropping that 3m20s breakdown in a club, no doubt!

The first proper set I ever played out in a club, at 414 in Brixton, London. I was originally due to play from 4:40am onwards but due to a cancellation earlier in the night, 3 of us got extensions... which was nice and meant I could improvise a little at the end after shamelessly pre-planning most of my set (you have to on your first time don't you!). I was a little worried before going on as the guy before me was banging out hard/techy trance at breakneck speeds (hence the high starting bpm on mine) but it went absolutely perfectly, and was one of the biggest thrills of my life. Loads of people came up to me at the end to shake my hand and a couple of hard-dance fans proclaimed something along the lines of "We normally don't do trance but that was f***ing brilliant", which was nice.
I apologise by the way for my piss poor attempt at recreating a spin-down effect in ableton twice near the end ;/

No, that isn't a mistake next to 'Length'... this was created after seeing an all night 9 hour set from Armin and thinking I could do better. I had a pre-set target of 130bpm - 150bpm, which on hindsight wasn't the best idea as it limited my choice of tracks later on; I did have a thing for bashing out peaktime trance around the mid 140s back then though. It's mostly tunes from around 2005-2006 but there are a fair few oldies dotted about, and unsurprisingly it does get pretty hard as nails towards the end! The first few hours are pretty mellow however. I've been wanting to do a sequel for a while but I don't burn enough CDs to do it live these days and I think I would lose patience with a 9hr-long ableton session!
